Crafted for Champions: Black Ferns Sevens & All Blacks Sevens

At Kitchens R Us, we’re proud to deliver locker and joinery solutions that support athletes, sports teams, and contribute to the vibrant sports community in the Bay of Plenty. One of our most exciting recent collaborations was with B3 Buildings on the fit-out inside the Adams Centre for High Performance in Mount Maunganui. This world-class training and sport science facility needed professional grade lockers, cabinetry, and a kitchenette for the elite Black Ferns Sevens, and All Blacks Sevens teams.

Located adjacent to Blake Park, the Adams Centre has become a hub for high performance sport in the Bay of Plenty, housing strength & conditioning training, recovery facilities, sports science research, and national and international team preparation spaces. Delivering a commercial interior fit-out in such a high-performance environment required a careful balance of durability, functionality, and design integrity.

This project was a true team effort. Kitchens R Us designer Cheryl worked closely with NZ Rugby’s Jess Jones and the B3 Buildings Matt Boss to develop a locker solution that met the exacting needs of a high-performance environment. Cheryl had been working with NZ Rugby’s Jess Jones and David Ormrod for some time on this and other small projects. Working with Jess and her knowledge of what is provided for professional sports players overseas, Cheryl was able to recreate this for our professional players right here in New Zealand.

B3 Buildings oversaw the full project and managed all the trades required. Matt Boss from B3 was great to work with again and did an amazing job managing all aspects of the project right down to the smallest details.

The process began with a prototype manufactured at our factory on Newton Street, and progressed to the manufacturing, supply, and on-site installation of the full cabinetry suite, including:

  • Main Athlete Lockers: Finished in Charred Oak woodgrain from Bestwood, the lockers reflect the traditional black associated with New Zealand sport, tying into the iconic uniforms of the All Blacks Sevens and Black Ferns Sevens.
  • Boot Lockers: Finished in Arctic White from Bestwood, these units offer clean lines and functional storage designed to keep fresh mud off the new custom laser cut carpet in the locker rooms.
  • Hardware: All locker doors were fitted with reliable and hardwearing Häfele fittings.
  • Bench Seating: Upholstered squabs for bench seating were supplied by The Upholstery Shoppe, adding comfort and colour cohesion throughout the locker spaces.
  • Kitchenette: Private kitchen cabinetry was installed inside the locker rooms for the sports teams.

Support for New Zealand Rugby Teams

The Adams Centre serves as the training base for the Black Ferns Sevens, who are double Olympic champions and World Series winners and have become cultural icons in women’s sport. As well as the All Blacks Sevens, renowned for their speed, skill, and consistent top-tier performances on the global stage, with multiple World Rugby Sevens Series titles and Rugby World Cup Sevens championships to their name. By contributing to a facility used by teams of this calibre, we’ve had the privilege of supporting environments that help shape excellence on and off the field.

Local Roots
Our involvement with this project represents our ongoing commitment to the Bay of Plenty community and its thriving rugby culture. We sponsor the Bay Steamers rugby team, and multiple local sports clubs, reinforcing our connection to and support for local athletes.

Working with B3 Buildings, a trusted fit-out and maintenance specialist in the 3Group network, was yet another rewarding collaboration. This project combined our joinery expertise with their construction skills to create a high-performance interior.

Delivering Quality Joinery
Supplying and installing lockers and joinery for a high-performance sports facility is all about balancing durability, and smart design. From the prototype stage through to installation, the project was highly collaborative, working closely with NZ Rugby, B3 Buildings, and other stakeholders. Seeing the completed fit-out in action was a real moment of satisfaction, knowing it will help keep the All Blacks Sevens and Black Ferns Sevens organised, comfortable, and ready to perform.
